JOHN COSTELLO SHINES FOR GOLD COAST REP'S
1.9.2010
Merrimac star John Costello stood out with a fine display for the Gold Coast rep team who took on Gold Coast United youth on Wednesday night. Costello showed Miron Bleiberg his good
qualities in a top display as a left midfielder. Bleiberg was watching his young charges take on the rep's and would of been impressed with Costello's touches and great reading of the game. The
result went United's way, but the exposure for Costello can only be a good thing for himself
and also for the Merrimac Football club.

NINE MAN MERRIMAC SHOWS TRUE GRIT

With seven regular first team players out, Merrimac who played with nine men showed great fighting spirit to keep United Eagles scoreless for 110 minutes, and the game was decided on
penaltys with the luck favouring the Eagles. Merrimac looked the better of the two sides but
the numerical advantage to the Eagles made it impossible for the Mac's to score.
With the title
already in the bag to Merrimac and injuries and send off's against them, Merrimac's fine display of football will be on show next Saturday when both first and reserves take on Griffith Uni at 1pm and 3pm. The winner's of these games will play in the grand final against
Burliegh and Eagles respectively. Merrimac look foward to playing in the 2011 premier league
.

The Adjudicator previews round 5

Central Coast Mariners v Melbourne Victory, Bluetongue Stadium, Friday 8pm (EST)
The Adjudicator says: "Melbourne remind me of Headless Chickens. They run around the field aimlessly and look as though they could drop dead at any moment, but I was referring more to the 1990s New Zealand rock band who sang, and I quote, "maybe I should've set my heart for Cruise Control". I knew the day would come when little Robbie would carry a team on his slight shoulders; now he must cart the Big V to Bluetongue Stadium and hope the A-League's master simulators don't pull another swifty over the man in the middle. The revival is on, people, and the Victory will live up to their name."

Melbourne Heart v North Queensland Fury, AAMI Park, Saturday 5.15pm (EST)
The Adjudicator says: "Sticking with the classics, and watching Melbourne's answer to boiled lollies stirs up thoughts of The Boss. Yours truly has fond memories of cruising the streets of Northcote in my 1979 Holden Gemini listening to Bruce Springsteen's Hungry Heart ; and no heart could be hungrier than one that continues to find ways not to chalk up a maiden victory. But my heart these days is scorned after the Fury chose to lose their first match in the week I manned up and actually backed them. It's a tipster's nightmare, especially for one as in-tune with their emotions as I am. So it has to be a draw."

Sydney FC v Adelaide United, Sydney Football Stadium, Saturday 7.30pm (EST)
The Adjudicator says: "With their season barely spluttering, who can blame Sydney FC for looking to the mastery of Brazilian football to get their championship quest back on track? I mean, just look at Juninho, who played 14 games for the Sky Blues in 2007-2008 and then two years later they win it all. Coincidence? I think not. But forget the South American flair. After the Reds started the season playing like a bunch of strangers, Dutch football has finally struck a chord in the City of Churches, and the result is goals! Goals in Adelaide! And goals for Adelaide this week as they add another defeat to Sydney's woes."

Newcastle Jets v Brisbane Roar, EnergyAustralia Stadium, Sunday 3pm (EST)
The Adjudicator says: "The Jets are playing every game as if it's their last, mainly because, at any point, it could literally prove to be their last game. Often you hear players talk about getting back to basics and playing for the fun of it, just like they did in under-12s; the men of gold may be doing just that after it was revealed pay slips didn't arrive in the mail last week. The financial situation at Newcastle is no laughing matter, but the sad thing for Jets fans is that it is going to get a whole lot more serious once the Roar have had their way at EnergyAustralia Stadium - by plenty to zero."

Perth Glory v Wellington Phoenix, nib Stadium, Sunday 5pm (EST)
The Adjudicator says: "So it seems that road trips could prove the Phoenix's kryptonite. If they thought it was powerful in South-East Queensland, wait until they take the extended trip past the Nullarbor. The Glory snuck out of AAMI Park with an injury-time penalty, but, with Robbie Fowler's flurry now underway, the goals could come flying in from anywhere on Sunday. The Phoenix have looked better than their points total suggests, but no one is surprised by the Bumble Bees merely competing anymore. A draw is the least they will need to prove their A-League mettle. With that in mind, I'll take a goal or two apiece."

--------------------SENIOR RESERVES 2010 PREMIERS----------------------------
Reserve coach Dave Benigno got what he so richly deserved on saturday, a senior merrimac
club premiership. Benigno who came through the junior ranks and then seniors as a merrimac
player has now gone the full circle with the club showing he has a prommising career as a
senior coach. Dave's late father Joe who was one of the founding members of the club would
be very proud of his youngest sons achievements. The respect he gets from his players and the
way Dave conducts himself around the club with his professonalism and enthusiasm makes
him a valuable member for the future of Merrimac International. The focus for Benigno now
will be getting the boys up for a grand final victory to secure the double which is a real
possability with the fighting spirit this team has.

BODIKIAN GETS JOB DONE
A double to striker Daniel Bodikian has seen Merrimac First Division win promotion to the 2011
Premier League. Bodikian scored early with a header 2 minutes into the game, but had to wait
until the 88th minute to seal a hard fought 2-1 victory over a Tweed Heads team that were up
for the challenge. With Tweed equalizing after 76 minutes and only needing a draw to push the
Mac's back to second on the ladder and into a playoff against Tweed Valley Kings, a John Costello cross low and hard found the feet of Bodikian who smashed the ball into the back of the net to bring joy and relief to the fans and players themselves with 2 minutes left plus 4 minutes of added time. The final 6 minutes seemed to take an eternity for nervous supporters as Tweed
kept on applying pressure right until the final whistle. Chris Matheou was superb at left back as was Daniel Bodikian up front.
Coach Dean Milosevic now faces the hard task of getting the side back up for the final series starting Saturday the 28th of August at home against the United Eagles." This group of lads wont need any motivating, they all have that hunger to succeed once they walk onto the pitch. Milosevic said. Right back player and Merrimac hardman Richard Hrehoresin paid tribute to the the Merrimac fans saying they've been the best on the coast this year. "Our supporters have travelled to away games as well as the home games and I can tell you they are the best fans going around. Hrehoresin said." They certainly played their part on Saturday getting the boys over the line with their enthusiasm." added Richard.
Gold coast soccer CEO Duncan Sims,Chairman Bob
Jeffrey and Deputy Chairman Damien Bresic were on hand to present both Merrimac senior teams the premiership trophies and player medals.

Holger Osieck Named Qantas Socceroos Coach Wednesday, 11 August 2010

Football Federation Australia (FFA) today named Holger Osieck as the new Head Coach of the Qantas Socceroos.

Osieck joins FFA at a time where the Qantas Socceroos are going through a period of rejuvenation and transition and his blend of working with elite youth teams in Europe, coaching winning teams at Championship level, including being part of a FIFA World Cup™ winning coaching team and his work at the forefront of technical development for FIFA means he is an ideal choice to take the reins at this point in time.

Osieck has demonstrated his ability to win major tournaments. He was assistant coach to Franz Beckenbauer with the German team that won the FIFA World Cup™ in 1990, head coach of the Canadian national team that won the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2000 and the head coach of the Urawa Red Diamonds, the largest club in Asian football, when they won the AFC Champions League only three years ago.

Osieck has worked at the coal face of youth development as a youth coach of the German Football Federation (DFB) and has worked at the forefront of technical development as the Director of the FIFA Technical Department.

FFA Chairman, Frank Lowy, AC, said: “Our coaching selection committee set out a number of very clear objectives from the outset to measure the prospective coaches against.

They must :

- have demonstrated the capacity to rebuild teams and to work with young footballers and develop them into internationally competitive players

- be prepared to work with the national technical director and his department to enhance the elite player pathway program

- have proven experience at international level and success in Asia

- commit to be based in Australia and work with Australian staff to develop our own leaders of the future

“Holger clearly meets these criteria and comes highly recommended as he has worked at all levels of the game and will combine his coaching expertise and experience with an ability to contribute to the future development of young players and in particular will act as mentor to Australian coaches as we develop our own national coaches for the future.

“This is a legacy that we believe Holger will leave for football in Australia. To that end we will be appointing a second Australian assistant coach who can work alongside Holger and Aurelio Vidmar.”

Lowy also added that: “Holger has extensive knowledge of Asian Football having won the AFC Champions League with Urawa Red Diamonds. He has experienced what it takes to traverse Asia and win tournaments and this will be invaluable experience as he leads our team into the AFC Asian Cup in January 2011 and as we prepare for another challenging campaign to qualify for the FIFA World Cup™ in Brazil in 2014.

“Holger has also worked in a nation where football is not the number one sport and proved that he can win a major Championship against nations who have football in their veins when he won the CONCACAF Gold Cup with Canada.”

In welcoming Holger to Australia, Lowy said: “Holger has had a lifelong passion for developing football not only as a coach but as an educator and he will impart a winning philosophy to players and coaches alike.”

Osieck said he was looking forward to working with the national team and on the development of football in Australia in general alongside FFA Technical Director Han Berger.
“I am excited about working with the Qantas Socceroos and building on the team's impressive results in Asia and around the world,” Osieck said.
“Taking over at a stage of natural transition as we start our preparations for 2014 is an ideal opportunity to influence the future direction of the young players and coaches from Australia.”
